Food hazards
Of course, only drink bottle water or drinks prepared with boiled water, like the national drink, red tea, that will be proposed with mint (nana in Arabic),  or Turkish coffee or hot or cold Karkade, a tea from flowers of a tree close to hibiscus (said to be good for heart). We recommend fresh fruit juices, lemon juice (from very small green lemons), guava juice etc.but request them to be made with bottle water.

Food is not varied but it is tasty due to the quality of vegetables.
A typical Egyptian meal would include:
- a baladi salad (tomato, cucumber, green salad, coriander, all of it raw and chopped into tiny pieces) eaten with a sesame sauce (tahina) which can be mixed with aubergine (babaranouch) or chick-pea (ourmous).
- a vegetable cassolette, named tajine (tomatos, aubergines, potatoes, French beans, green peas, gombos or ocras,.) cooked for hours with beef or chicken or kofta (chopped meat with oriental spices, but not strong, looking like small sausages),
- creole cooked rice with small vermicelli.

Any guide would advise against raw vegetables. This advice is appropriate to those with particularly sensitive  bowels or who stay on cruise boats or felucca. For others, it would be a pity not to enjoy the quality and marvellous taste of Egyptian vegetables. The address recommended under Restaurants is safe as regards hygiene, we tested it many times: you can trust it. However, we advise to have some rice at all meals: it will help compensate food and climate changes and it is delicious.

Also, under Restaurants, you can find an address where you can eat something different from Egyptian food: after 5 or 6 Egyptian meals, you will probably look forward to having something else. There, you can also have a quick meal to fully enjoy visits or have tea time at sunset, which is really enjoyable after a whole day walking in historic sites.
